Circle of Serbian Sisters – Kolo srpksih sistara
The Circle of Serbian Sisters of St. Stevan of Decani was founded on October 7, 1963, at the Chicago home of Mrs. Dorothy Stepan. Kolo’s primary goal is to support the church in all its undertaking and to instill in the youth the Serbian heritage, culture and customs. Serbian Sisters achievements are many – they held Christmas Bazaars, bake sales, card games, buffets, rummage sales, fashion shows, they are also the reason for our Kolo’s reputation for fine Serbian cuisine. Every June 28th, our Kolo sisters form a group outing at Daley center to honor Vidovdan.
Folklore Group “Avala”
Avala Folklore Group, though founded much earlier, was formally organized in 1981 by Ratko and Ljiljiana Jovanovic along with Millie Mitrovic and Budimka Stojanovic. Currently our folklore group has a mini, small, junior and senior groups, totaling about 90 members. The concept has always been the same: that our children keep their identity and never forget our traditions and dances. Folklore has enabled them to have many friendships, not only in Chicago but throughout the United States and Canada.
Avala Folklore group has attained national acclaim and traveled across our continent. For many years now, Avala has participated in Illinois Annual State Fairs and in Michigan City at the Oktoberfest.
Sunday School
The goal of this Sunday School is not only to teach the students the basics: Cyrillic Alphabet (printed and written), grammar, punctuation and the poetry connected with certain holidays; but to introduce them to our very rich, spiritual and cultural heritage. In order to achieve these goals, we have established a church library, and with the help of many members we were able to fill it with literary treasures from the past and present for both adult and children. To top it off, we are extremely fortunate to have a highly qualified staff of teachers and assistants. |
